The Betrayal of Ka by Shea Oliver

Age: 18+

Plot Development: B

Character Development: A

Three storylines that seem to have no connection, converge and create a standout among others of the genre. The stories are slow to start off with and it is bit confusing because despite there being different chapter names, you don't know which characters' story you're diving into. It doesn't take long sometimes for you to realize but for me I had to go back and start the chapter again, which made me feel removed from the story.

About half way through is when the plot lines seem to merge with each other. The author, Shea Oliver, married the plot lines well. It wasn't BAM...these stories are related, there were hints here and there and then you found out. The slow build up is rare to find in most books without it being obvious that it's happening.

When it comes to creating a sci-fi novel that has a setting, language, or technology that is unknown to the audience, the author must tried lightly when writing. Shea Oliver does such and is an extremely descriptive author. Although at times the descriptions do become a bit overwhelming, sometimes the being concise and simpler is best.

Overall, I recommend this book because it is the start to something great and different than the other sci-fi books out there as of late. The writing is immersive and characters intriguing. I can't wait to see where Shea Oliver takes this story next!
